GUIDE

We can't fly out for every one of the grandkids' birthdays, and I hate missing the party. How can we still be part of the day?

Claim one moment of the birthday that is yours: a song waiting for them at breakfast, your card opened at the table, or a short call after the party. USPS Ground Advantage delivers in 2-5 days with tracking included, so mail the gift a week ahead and it can be waiting before the day.

WHY

Why this happens

With grandkids in another state, every birthday is a trip: flights, time off, a place to stay. Most grandparents end up choosing a few visits a year, maybe one birthday and one holiday, and covering the rest from home. It is a sensible choice, and it still hurts on the day, when the photos of a party you were not at show up in the evening.

The trouble with "join from home" is that a birthday party is the busiest hour of the day. Kids run around, the cake comes out, gifts get opened in a blur, and a video call in the middle of it rarely works. What does work is a moment that does not depend on the party at all: one the child knows is from you, at a time the parents can easily keep.

HOW TO

What you can do starting today

  1. Pick the one moment that belongs to youNo app needed

Decide with the parents ahead of time which moment is yours, so nobody has to remember in the rush. It could be your recorded song playing at breakfast, your card opened before the cake, or a five-minute call once the guests have left. One clear moment that happens every year is easier to keep than a vague "call us during the party."

  2. Record your birthday song the day beforeNo app needed

Sing happy birthday on video, use the child's name, and add one thing you love about them this year. Send it the evening before so it is ready at breakfast. The child can play it again whenever they like, and it does not matter whether they are in the mood for a call on the day.

  3. Mail the gift a week ahead, with trackingNo app needed

USPS says Ground Advantage packages are delivered in 2-5 days and include USPS Tracking. Mailing a week before the birthday covers those five days with a couple of days to spare, and the tracking tells you when it arrives. Ask the parents to set it aside so it can be opened on the day, ideally as your moment.

  4. Let the parents see your card comingNo app needed

Tracking is not available for First-Class Mail items, so a card with a stamp cannot be followed the way a package can. If the parents sign up for USPS Informed Delivery, which is free, they get grayscale images of letter-sized mail arriving soon in a morning email or on the dashboard, so they can spot your card and save it for the birthday.

  5. Celebrate at your house tooNo app needed

Have a slice of cake at your own table on the day, wearing a party hat, and send a photo or a few seconds of video. The child sees that the birthday is being celebrated in two places, and that you set aside part of your day for them.

WITH SEENOW!

Doing it with seenow!

seenow! is a private family app where everyone takes a short video, about 2 seconds a day. On a birthday, it works best for the candle moment and for your own celebration at home.

  • The parents can film blowing out the candles with the seenow! camera, front and back cameras at once, so you see the cake and the child's face in one clip. You get a notification when they post.
  • To see that day's clips, you post your own clip that day first; until then they are blurred. Your party hat and cake at home is a natural one to post.
  • At the end of the week, seenow! makes a recap video from the clips automatically, so the birthday week is easy to watch again later.

What seenow! can’t do

  • Only clips taken with the seenow! camera can be posted. A birthday song you already recorded on your phone has to be sent another way, such as a text message.
  • seenow! does not make video calls, and it does not mail or track gifts.

POINT

Things to watch for in this situation

Keep it even between siblings

If you visit for one grandchild's birthday, the others will notice. Try to rotate which birthday you attend each year, and give the others the same recorded song and the same moment of the day.

Don't compete with the party

Avoid calling while the guests are there. Ask the parents what time the party ends, and keep your call for after it, when the child can show you the gifts.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How early should I mail a birthday gift to a grandchild in another state?

USPS says Ground Advantage packages are delivered in 2-5 days, with tracking included. Mailing about a week before the birthday covers that range with a little room to spare. Check the estimated delivery date the post office gives you when you mail it.

Can the parents tell when my birthday card is about to arrive?

Stamped cards cannot be tracked, but USPS Informed Delivery, which is free, shows the receiving household grayscale images of letter-sized mail arriving soon. The parents can use it to spot your card and save it for the day.
